I show up.
Chuck Close said "Inspiration is for amateurs, the rest of us just show up and get to work!"
As harsh as that statement might seem, it's the truth. Time and time again, I find that if I wait for the world to show me a sign, to give me inspiration, basically just WAIT. Nothing happens. But if I do things to MAKE things happen, they weirdly, do.
The summer time is always a time, I lack for inspiration, (those of you who follow me on Instagram, might not agree, ha!), but yes, I lack for inspiration. The warm air, the sunshine, the beautiful blue sky and most recently the freakin' hot temperatures, take me away from the studio and into the world, usually unproductively.
This year, however, I decided to take a cue from one of my extremely talented coworkers (thanks Tristan for posting such beautiful little works, I had to jump on that bandwagon!!!) and step outside of my usual illustrative style, and paint outside, from nature, from even photographs OF nature...whatever inspires, but to just paint. To practice for the sake of practice.
I got a whole new beautiful watercolour set, (juicy lovely, QoR watercolours...sooooooo nice....drool!), and have a new Moleskine all ready, so out I've gone out! Not all pictures have been from life, but they've been painted mostly outside of my studio and not in this sauna I call my house.
And wouldn't you know it, I've been Summertime-productive! But even more importantly, I've had FUN!
So if you're also looking for inspiration, or rather, waiting for it. May I suggest you just grab your stuff, head outside, sit some place and draw/paint it. Not to create a grand masterpiece but to just show up and get to work. (Thanks Chuck for being such a dick, but also, an inspiration!)
All the best Friends, and stay inspired!
Enjoy the mini gallery below, its a collection of the works I've painted in the last few weeks! Hope you like them!
